DMN: Tincy Miller Recommended for SBOE District 12

tincey-miller3The State Board of Education has become an awfully political animal. Too often, culture-war clashes dominate the board’s discussions and drown out legitimate questions about how best to educate kids.

To her credit, Geraldine “Tincy” Miller generally tries to steer clear of this fray. Miller, a longtime board member and a Republican, regularly breaks from the social-conservative voting bloc on the board and offers a more moderate view.

For example, she was a key swing vote in skirmishes about science standards, rejecting proposals that would have required students to study the “weaknesses” in the theory of evolution. Miller, 74, also has cautioned against overkill when injecting religious topics into the classroom.

Admittedly, Miller occasionally lurches right. But her focus on academics and her efforts to find a reasonable middle ground make Miller deserving of another term.

In the March 2 GOP primary, Miller faces George Clayton, an academic coordinator at North Dallas High School. He’s been on the front lines and says he feels abandoned by the Board of Education and the Legislature. But Clayton’s passion and anger haven’t translated into workable ideas for the post he’s seeking. And Clayton, 60, seems to have a tenuous grasp on the board’s role.

With no opposition in the fall, Miller is the better option for voters in District 12.

I am SICK and Tired of MIDDLE GROUND.
Elect people that REFLECT 100% CONSERVATIVE VALUES.
WE NEED TO TURN THINGS BACK.
Neither of the Two candidates IMPRESS ME.

Tincey is well named the amount of information she shares is MINUSCULE.
Teaching reading to special education children qualifies her if the majority of TEXAS school children require SPECIAL EDUCATION.
Assuming that that knowledge transpires to the Majority of Texas Education is laughable.
“Reading is best taught using a combination of three methodologies:

* Auditory training – training for the ears to prepare the child’s brain for phonics.
* Phonics – knowledge of letter(s) sounds.
* Whole Language – immediate application of phonics into connected stories ”
Anyone that does NOT understand this certainly DOES NOT need to be making decisions for ALL TEXAS children.
George is a loose cannon
He sounds like a representative from the NEA.
Although he does make 4 good points
#1 All curriculum must be taught at grade level. “Dumbing down”curriculum will not be permitted.
#2 Students are to be held to the highest learning standards. Students who refuse to complete assignments will receive a grade of “0″ on the assignment
#3 Prohibit any district from implementing a “give away” grade policy.
#4 Elimination of minimum grades; in some district now set at “50″
UNFORTUNATELY the rest of his suggestions will in NO way positively affect educating children.

It is too bad someone with credible conservative values and ideas is not in the race.
