“Open-Source” Classroom Materials: Nation’s Oldest Hispanic Rights Groups Urge Perry to Allow Public Review
SAN ANTONIO – At a San Antonio press conference Thursday, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) & the American G.I. Forum warned that rules adopted by Texas Education Commissioner Robert Scott for adoption of “Open-Source” textbook material threaten or prevent public participation in the textbook review process, and potentially expose Texas to lawsuits because certain parts of the state will not have “equal access” to online content.
The nation’s two oldest Hispanic civil rights groups are calling on Gov. Perry to ensure that the public has the opportunity to fully review and comment on all “Open-Source” textbook material before it is approved for use by Texas schoolchildren.
“Texas schoolchildren could end up being taught with material that no one has seen or critically reviewed,” said LULAC National President Rosa Rosales.
Recently approved open-source legislation allows Commissioner Scott to approve for sale to Texas school districts instructional material that neither the State Board of Education nor the public has had a chance to review for suitability and alignment with curriculum standards.
Some of that material may be available for school districts to purchase as early as March.
The civil rights groups also urged Texas’ State Board of Education to adopt social studies instructional material that properly recognizes the
contribution Hispanics have made to Texas and the nation.
“Latinos make up 40 percent of Texas and many historical Latino figures have made invaluable contributions to the state of Texas. Unfortunately, many of these historical Latino figures will not be included in the new social studies curriculum,” President Rosales said.
“Let’s make our social studies curriculum relevant for all Texas schoolchildren,” she said.

If it is relavent to being an American then fine but if it has to do with the teaching of Hispanic history, they can go to Mexico and be indoctrinated on the hate that is being taught over there. This is America and we don’t need to change our history for anyone!!

Yes, LULAC National President Rosa Rosales. If a Spanish person contributed to what has made Texas what she is today, I can agree to that fact of that person being put in a text book.
But…and that is a big BUT…do not force and make the Spanish language or something falsely historical to make the Spanish nationality be the BIG part of Texas history! We, our Texas…a Republic State in America… is an English speaking country, and made up of many nationalities, right here in TEXAS!
CW thanks for the site for Gutierrez HR4321 bill. That piece of legislation would be a slap in the face of any former immigrant who came to America…LEGALLY! I can’t understand what part of “we do not want illegals/and NO AMESTY” that they don’t understand! If America is so great to come to live and get a decent job, why do they think that is so? We are made up of so many different nationalities. Our forefathers came over to America and gave great thought on how our Government should be ran. We have fought wars to make America what it is today….and illegals want to come here and destroy what we have. They take, and take and take!
Again my story of the small hometown…the people from the big city come and love the small quaint old ways of the town. Soon…they(the Big City people) take over the city council, one by one…then things start to change around town. Hmmm….our lovely old town is not what it used to be. Now in a nutshell…this is what the illegals are doing to our system, healthcare, schools, welfare…they have their hands out…and want more, more, more! I have no problem with helping a person that helps theirselves…but excuse me…breaking the law is not helping theirsleves or the system! AMESTY is not the ANSWER!

I guess you were so ‘intent’ you also forgot to use the correct English term ‘themselves’, rather than the nonexistent word ‘theirselves. And in fact, I guess you were so ‘intent’ in your rant about amnesty that you completely overlooked the subject of the article, wherein LULAC is actually taking the very conservative position that material made available to public education students should NOT emanate from an ‘open-source’ format that does not allow for sufficient oversight (and ‘proving up’ ) of the material.
Also, please note that our forefathers came over and gave great thought on how our government should be run. Not ran.
In future, please intend to respond to the article with comments related to the article, and comment on illegal immigration and amnesty under articles of which they are the actual subject.

Lorenzo de Zavala: Your desire to change history books and illegal immigrants can’t be separated. It is the illegals who want to change the books.
And before you decide to correct anyone else’s grammar, remember that it is Hispanics that call “chocolate” “shocklate”. I could go on but that would lower me to your mentality.

I believe that all school books should be reviewed by the school board and the parents of the students. We cannot rewrite history or teach history that is false. If you want Mexican History go to Mexico and learn it there. We do not need to print books in both English and Spanish. This is The United States of America, we speak ENGLISH! There are way too many falsehoods about this great Country of Ours being bantied about. You can’t hide from the truth or bury it in a text book!
This issue needs to be spoken up about, so that the people who vote have a better understanding of what this Bill purposes. I want our children to know the truth about Texas and the rest of America. Not some made up story that makes the Mexicans look better than Davey Crockett! I hope you can help get the facts out to the people.

Im Jonathan Contreras a 16 year old, mexican american male, currently a junior at a public high school in Baytown, Texas enrolled in U.S. History. I must inform you about your false statement on your believe on David Crockett.
David Crockett is a coward that so called hero actually didnt die fighting at the Alamo for his country he actually hid like a frightened coward that he is. “Crockett’s body was found in the barracks surrounded by “no less than sixteen Mexican corpses”, with Crockett’s knife buried in one of them.”, “It is believed that many stories, such as the surrender and execution of Crockett, were created and spread in order to discredit Santa Anna and add to his role as villain.”, although I might be wrong, this is what I was thought in my U.S. History class in Baytown, Texas and I believe it.
I also must say how much I hate this racist country and the history full of racism against people of color or people not of any European descent such as Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, etc.,(although I do know some of those immigrants encountered discrimination once arriving to the U.S.) last time I checked none of these European countries arent in the United States therefore we are all of different descents from all over the world, that immigrated to the U.S. making everyone an immigrant of this country. One theory of immigration distinguishes between push factors and pull factors, and the pull factor to coming to the U.S. is for a better life and better opportunities and get a piece of the American Dream, and thats just what we Mexicans, Cubans, Salvadorans, Dominicans, Guatemalans, Colombians, Hondurans, Ecuadorians, Peruvians, etc. are looking for we might be breaking laws by coming here illegaly but when times are hard, we must do whatever it takes to survive and the U.S. is a haven for us just like it was for your descendants.
This country was founded by white men looking for a new start, known as the founding fathers, but note that they all are were rich white men and immigrants and most were christians, and when they took the steps to becoming an independent country they thought of what would be best for the “white men”, for example the statement in the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”, when they wrote that all men were created equal, sure they meant all white men were created equal without thinking of what was to come in 234 years and taking it to thought. The most racist idea from this country was Manifest Destiny the belief that the United States was destined, even divinely ordained, to expand across the North American continent, from the Atlantic seaboard to the Pacific Ocean, seriously, thats just the U.S. wanting to become an Imperialist? Or like President Theodore Roosevelt said that only civilized english speaking countries are the fittest, according to the theory survival of the fittest. So I can say this country was created with christian principles and by white men. But all that is changing and history changes and nothing can be done about it, its life, if the country gets a black president and is run by black people the o’well, if the country gets a hispanic president and is run by hispanics then o’well, do you get my point? If the U.S. goes bankrupt and dollar falls then what would happen? Wouldnt we all be moving to a better place by immigrating its a survival mechanism. Or if the hispanic minority population becomes the majority in the U.S. as they say it will become true in the near future, theres nothing that can be done about it but accept it or get out.

Well thats what are my thoughts, and what Ive learned through the Texas Curriculum and im thankful for making me realize how evil this country is, I truly wish I was born in México then this country but my parents immigrated here for the better, and to give me a good life, and im thankful.

People, You are forgetting that Texas belong to Mexico before it became part of the United States. Texas history IS and WILL ALWAYS be about “Mexican history”. Every native of Texas should consider themselves lucky to be a TEXAN… an we should embellish our history even if you are not of Mexican decendent. Our process of Texas laws are different from other states, our history is different from other states. Learning about “Mexican History”, as you call it, will not make you a Mexican. It just keeps you from being ignorant.
Johathan, remember that the Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, etc., are not descendents of Texas……they were the immigrants !!

Wow, I cant believe some of the comments in here. A lot of the people here need to know that Texas, and Americas history is intertwined with Mexico just like we are intertwined with Briton. By not addressing it you are ignoring the repression Mexican Americans faced by Americans. Yeah it’s not something the country is proud of but neither is slavery, we teach it so that way we don’t REPEAT it.
