Sessions Calls on Candidate Renee Swann to Return PPP Loan to U.S. Treasury

“It is the taxpayers’ money, and she’s running for elected office at the federal level,” said Sessions.

Texas Insider Report: WACO, TX – “After receiving a (Paycheck Protection Program) loan from the federal government, Renee Swann made a large personal loan to her campaign. She should not have looked to the federal government for assistance based upon the office she’s now seeking, not to mention the principles she’s espoused at public events,” said Swann’s Congressional District 17 opponent in the July 14th Republican primary run-off, Pete Sessions, after the U.S. Treasury Department released the names of the companies and individuals who received “Paycheck Protection Program” (PPP) loans.

The Treasury Department’s July 6th report reveals a PPP loan of between $150,000 and $350,000 was provided to Swann’s husband, Russell E. Swann. The borrowing entity is a corporation under his control.

At issue, says Sessions, is the “Paycheck Protection Program” loan’s April 13, 2020 approval date, which preceded Renee Swann’s most recent personal loan to her Congressional campaign, Federal Elections Commission (FEC) records show.

After receiving the April 13th loan from the federal government, Swann’s July 2, 2020 FEC Report discloses a personal loan to her campaign on June 10th  in the amount of $249,500.

“It is the taxpayers’ money, and she’s running for elected office at the federal level,” said Sessions.

“The loan was made to a business in which Renee Swann is part-owner through community property. By taking the PPP loan, she’s placed herself in conflict from ever serving in Congress,” he said.

“First, I call on Renee Swann to divulge the exact amount of the PPP loan. Was it $150,000 or $350,000?

“And to maintain any credibility as a candidate for the Republican nomination, Renee Swann should return the money – now,” said Sessions.

“Second,” continued Sessions, “money is fungible. It appears the PPP loan allowed Renee and her husband to help finance her campaign. She cannot in good faith represent the people of this district while also voting on legislation governing future collection of PPP loans.

“Lastly, conservatives deserve full transparency about these events,” Sessions said.

“At every public event in which I’ve shared the stage with Renee, she’s spoken at length about her opposition to ‘the swamp in Washington, D.C.’ and she’s railed against ‘special interests’ having too much influence in the federal government. I share many of her sentiments, but how can she hold herself out as an opponent to those interests when she’s voluntarily enlisted in their ranks?” asked Sessions.

In her bid to win the 17th District Congressional seat Republican nomination, Swann has thus far made personal loans to her campaign totaling approximately $650,000.

“I fully support the objectives of the PPP program,” Sessions said. “Our nation’s never experienced a government-ordered shutdown of almost all business operations in peacetime. Entrepreneurs, doctors, farmers and ranchers legitimately participated in the PPP loan program, but hundreds of thousands of other small businesses did not receive money,” noted Sessions.

Republican voters have the right to know as much information as possible about the loans while early voting continues, said the Sessions campaign in a news release.

Early voting in various run-off elections across Texas concludes this Friday, July 10, prior to the Tuesday, July 14th election.
