Texas’ School Funding Lawsuits Take 1st Step, Move Forward

Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas - In a March 28th meeting between Austin-based Judge Dietz (District Court Judge) and attorneys for the school finance lawsuits and the Office of the Attorney General, which included the Texas Taxpayer & Student Fairness Coalition, the MALDEF, Haynes & Boone, and Thompson-Horton cases, Dietz discussed setting the trial to begin in mid-October, but did not set the actual date. Dietz did set April 16, 2012, as the deadline for agreement on the scheduling order.

In response to the Agreed and Unopposed Motion to Consolidate for Filing Purposes, Discovery and Trial filed on March 27th, the Judge indicated he would roll all four lawsuits (Texas Taxpayer & Student Fairness Coalition, MALDEF, Haynes & Boone, and Thompson-Horton) together under one cause number.

Also included will be the Texans for Real Efficiency & Equity in Education group, since they intervened with the Thompson-Horton lawsuit.

Expert reports for the plaintiffs are due by July 30th and expert reports for the State by August 27th.
