“By and large the Hispanic Community agrees that the rule of law is to be applied and in force.”
Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas — “We know that a bill will be coming to my desk (for signing into law.) Our penalties will be so strong, it will be impossible to have Sanctuary City policies in the State of Texas,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott told Fox New’s Lou Dobbs Tuesday evening.
“Texas is going to be a leader nationally by ensuring that we ban Sanctuary City policies, that has real teeth in it, real consequences for cities and counties, and officials who adopt Sanctuary City policies.
“As everyone knows, Texas is a very welcoming state. Texas is made up of immigrants, and Texas is very pro-immigration. The issue is Illegal Immigration, and people need to recognize the distinct difference between the two,” said Abbott.
“Texas has been long-connected to the Hispanic Community, even before Texas was a state. By and large the Hispanic Community agrees that the rule of law is to be applied and in force, and that’s all we’re seeking to do.
“Once this law passes, and it will go into effect on September 1st, any act like (those of) the Travis County Sheriff that violates this law will subject them to very stiff penalties:
- One, it can subject them to jail.
- Two, separate from jail, they can be removed from office.
- Three, they can be subject to fines that would add up to about $9 million dollars per year, about $25,000 a day,” Abbott said.
“And on top of that, I as governor will retain my ability to defund these counties from grants they are receiving,” said Abbott.
