Austin Tea Party

On April 15 – Tax Day – some may need a reminder of just who is paying for all the government spending: its us, the American taxpayer.  The tax burden has imposed hardships on all Texas families. Tea Parties might not be a real relief from this burden, but showing concern where our tax dollars go will send a message to Washington that the people want the spending to stop.

2,000 Texans Tell Washington: “Don’t Mess With Texas!”

AUSTIN, Texas — It’s tax day and thousands of citizens are fed up with the federal government’s attempts to strong-arm Texas into expanding government programs and spending through the so-called stimulus funding.  More than 2,000 citizens gathered at Austin City Hall on tax day to send a strongly-worded message to Washington, D.C.: “Don’t Mess With Texas!”

“Texas stands as a beacon of fiscal responsibility.  Our economy is stronger than any other in the country, and Texans are angry that D.C. is trying to tell us how to spend our own tax dollars,” said Peggy Venable, Americans for Prosperity State Director. “We sent a clear message today that we don’t need or want stimulus dollars that have federal strings attached.”

Venable praised Gov. Rick Perry, who has taken a strong stand against the federal government overstepping its Constitutional boundaries.

“We are glad that Gov. Perry and many legislators are reinforcing states’ rights and sovereignty over the federal government,” she said. “We are also extremely grateful for our Texas leaders have Texas a beacon of fiscal responsibility in the country. Washington, D.C. should take a page out of Texas’ playbook if they want to promote prosperity.”

At the “Don’t Mess With Texas” Tea Party at City Hall, Gov. Perry told the crowd that – with Washington eroding Americans’ rights, spending their tax dollars and ruining their children’s hope for a future – the time had come to tell D.C. “enough!”

“We won’t stand for our pockets being picked, our children’s futures being mortgaged or our rights being taken away,” Perry said. “We will not be ignored! Cut spending, cut taxes, shrink the government, re-read the Constitution. Do these things and our nation will remain strong.”

Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams also spoke at the rally, telling attendees that when government forgets it has its power on loan from the people, the time has come to “call the note.”

“I don’t care if they call the plan a ‘stimulus’ – it still stinks to high heaven,” Williams said. “My message to Washington is this: There would be no tea party if you weren’t spending like it’s a bachelor party.”

The “Don’t Mess With Texas” Tea Party was part of a nationwide movement of protests against high tax burdens, unrestrained spending, and the federal stimulus and bailout packages. The rally was jointly organized by the Texas chapter of Americans for Prosperity (www.afptx.org) and Texans for Fiscal Responsibility (www.empowertexans.com) and other participating organizations listed on the AFP and TFR Web sites.

Perry said “we won’t stand for our pockets being picked, our children’s futures being mortgaged or our rights being taken away.” YAWN. I guess the $17 billion in stimulus money Perry DID accept isn’t included in that? Why isn’t anyone calling this goon out for taking over 95% of the stimulus dollars and then acting like some sort of fiscal savior?

Agreed. I hate it when politicians say ‘we will not stand for this’ or ‘this is unacceptable’ – and then they let it stand and accept it. Words are cheap, actions run deep.

Actually, Governor Perry is doing us a favor by NOT taking any stimulus dollars with strings attached.

He’s making sure that Texas isn’t forced to obligate our own funds and that we don’t expand government more.

Perry like Glenn Beck is really full of it. Their boy Bush brought on this mess. They never complained when the Bush wasted billions and billions in Iraq. Their only concern is that Obama fails. They would bankrupt the entire world for that. Texas is big because it has to hold all these morons and liars.

I would hate to have as much Hate as Cliff seems to have. But, this is seems to be typical of someone who can only blame Bush for all our problems. Granted, Bush has been the cause of some, but blaming the war in Iraq shows the hate Cliff holds. Cliff, I was a Marine during Vietnam I would love to have you experience the Joy of the Corp! You might change the direction of your hate. You might appreciate Life, and the Freedom we have provided the citizens of Iraq. And oh, by the way….where is all that oil we were suppose to be after? As far as Governor Perry, I do not trust him. He is pandering to us due to the upcoming election. See, I am not totally stupid!…ha, ha. Plus, I can laugh! Amazing! P.S Cliff – Do not bring up weapons of mass destruction since I brought up oil. That is 5 year old tears you have been shedding…. and things were found, you just can not accept them. You wanted a nuecular bomb!

Cliff, those of us who went were not there because we were Republicans. The debate isn’t about “your boy” Obama or Bush, its about a run-away government, a problem both political parties have worked to create. We are trying put a stop to this huge power grab, reckless budgets, and arrogance. When it comes to protecting the constitution, we are all on the same team. Right now, Washington resembles Orwell’s Animal Farm, more than it does the founding of this country.

Whoa, Cliff! Seems you’ve taken a hard left turn there, buddy. I think perhaps you put too much stock in Comrade Obama.

Remember that this is still (for now) a democratic country. Only 52% of the country voted for Obama, hardly a landslide. And before his reign is over, I think you will find that a whole lot of people will be both disappointed and worse off financially.

Stop being paranoid – nobody wants America to fail. If watching (semi-crackpots like) Beck upsets you so much, then change the channel yourself. Obama cannot do everything for you, no matter what he promised during his campaign.

While not Gov. Perry’s biggest fan, he did the right thing by turning down the UIC portion of the bailout. A lot of good things will be done with the other 95%, but that last 5% would have forced a permanent increase to the state budget.

I am all for anything that forestalls a Texas state income tax. We are indeed fortunate that we currently don’t, and I hope we can continue to practice fiscal responsibility, no matter how unpopular it seems to the uninformed.

Granted, Bush spent massive amounts on a terrible war, and the national debt was doubled in 8 years. Not many would argue that he was anything but an idiot.

However, at the rate Obama and the al-Dem congress are running up debt, no matter what they are spending it on, our debt will be re-doubled in 10 years. Remind me, when did we change to two wrongs making things right?

People from all over America, not just the 46% who did not vote for Obama, are tired of seeing this trend of government growth and spending, and that is what the Tea Parties are all about.

I do feel that Bill has something on the sudden interest in our Governor attempting to get in front of the parade of tea parties and trying to grab the baton from those that started it. As for other politicians, I was disappointed when Hutchison didn’t get the nod from McCain for his VP and would like to see her as our Governor, but I do think that the battle between her and Perry is going to be intense and may turn away voters. I hope not because we are not gaining as much as we need to right now.

The tea parties were a good start though. Yike, I actually need to go to the store and get tea – I mailed all mine out.

The Tea Parties were for “we hte People” to send a message to “all” the morons in the House and Senate that we put there and are supposed to be serving us—not the other way around! Senator’s Cornyn and Hutchison have both let us down. They pick and choose the bills they want passed to keep their pepularity with the constiuents and their fellow liberals in Cngress. These are not what I want representing me and my state in D.C. We need strong conservatives in both Houses that will stand by what they say and say what they mean.

Governor Perry will have my vote against Senator Hutchison. He showed stength and courage when he “didn’t” accept the stimulus money—and he once again showed strength and courage with all the things he said at the Tea Party!

Glen Beck Is a libertarian—not a Republican! He has critizied Bush just as much as he has Obama.! Cliff: do you watch the Glen Beck show on Fox? I suggest you do that before you jump to the conclusino that he hasn’t critizied Bush. My memory is that he has critizied him many times!

After all the Tea Parties, it is now up to us to show “all “of them both Houses and the liberal media that we mean business and vote all these morons that have let us down out of office! God Bless America!

Guys, I’m the biggest Republican around…literally. 6′5″, 290 lbs. And figuratively…I’m hard-core Republican.

But that means that I’ve established a REALLY nasty reputation calling out my fellow Republicans…specifically the elected variety. Sen. John Carona now walks with a limp due to an ass-chewing I gave him in Farmers Branch in December.

State Rep. Lois Kolkhorst probably won’t be asking me any more questions on the record in testimony before the Sunset Commission or any other committee of the Legislature…hurts too much hearing my response elicit raucous LAUGHTER from the crowd.

And I created a distinctive buzz, and generated a personal reply via facebook, from FORMER State Rep. Bill Keffer recently. See, Bill was voted OUT in 2006. Now why does a Republican in Texas get voted out in 2006? Cuz he deserved it…just like all the rest who were canned! And Texans told him so again in 2008 as well. So when he popped up on Insider with an op-ed calling for accountability of our elected officials, I called him on the carpet and said, “You have NO voice, sire.” His reply on facebook: “WOW!! Was that your reply to my op-ed on Texas Insider?”

Yes it was. And this is not the first time that I have said it was GROSSLY inappropriate to have Gov. Perry at the Austin TEA Party. If the purpose was to call our GOVERNMENT elected officials to account, Perry is among the worst of the worst. He does not deserve the honor of hearing applause any longer. He has sold us out just as badly on freeways, congestion relief and transportation, not to mention HPV and illegal immigration…plus being the most vindictive politician in the State…as have any elected officials in EITHER party in Washington.

Austin, you have another chance on July 4th…GET IT RIGHT next time!! If you’re going to have politicians on your stage, make sure they have a voice for your event. 95% of the stimulus package is still 95% pork and Perry accepted it just fine.

Wake up folks!! We don’t get heard if we don’t send the right message…and Perry doesn’t have the voice for that message.

Why would a Governor reject stimulus money that his citizens have already paid for?

The stimulus money is taxpayers money. Should a Governor say oh no thank you why dont you take Texas’ taxpayer money and give it to Oklahoma for me.

No thank you.

A Dumas or anyone…if Texas had a State income tax, would that mean we’d be sending less to Washington?

Hard to stand up and give a speech for “states rights,” when you don’t even have the guts to return 2 little memorial plaques to the Texas Supreme Court building that were taken down in the “dark of night” before he was governor. The plaques representing and honoring our Texas soldiers who fought during the “Civil War.”

Don’t give me grandstanding speeches in public, when you won’t do the RIGHT things of “honor,” in private when no one is looking. THAT is true character, to do the right thing of duty when NO ONE is watching and there are NO cameras around.

Put back the plaques Gov. Perry! not new plaques that have been politically correctly “cleansed” of General Lee’s quote about Texas troops, nor the CSA battle flag.

PUT those historic “states rights” plaques back!!!!

Until then, in my mind your a coward on this issue, I don’t want to hear it.

Speech vs a substantive action gesture of courage and doing the right thing.

This under reported travesty to Texas History has been brushed under the rug for way too long now.

Seriously, if you can’t right a wrong that was done under your predisessor with those plaques, having to do with the last time Texas exerted “states rights guranteed under the constitution” back in 1861, then I DON’T WANT TO HEAR IT!!!!

Put em back, then give speeches about “states rights”.

For those of you who jumped on Cliff, I think he would actually be happy with most of your responses. We as republicans felt we had to defend Bush for years, he was our president.

But the fact is, he doubled the National Debt, broke nearly every one of his 2000 campaign promises and has nearly destroyed the Republican Party with his “war on Terror”.

Personally, I blame the people who advised him, I really don’t feel that was him as our president.

If it takes Obama to help the Republican Party find it’s “Classic Liberal” Roots and realizes the Rockefeller wing of the party are really Rino’s, then I think we will do good in 2010 and 2012.

As far as Texas Governor, I loved Perry’s speech, but I am leery of him. Like my wife said, he has lied to us in the past, what makes you thing he isn’t lying now. I might have to agree.

Perry changed his pursuit of toll roads – not his mind. He said he would abandon the pursuit yielding to the will of the people. He still wants toll roads and the Trans Texas Corridor. I do not believe he will shove it down our throats – if he were going to do so – it would have been done. I am very proud of how he handled the stimulus package. He took part because we pay no matter what – he just made sure we are not financially obligated after that bank roll expires. Kay Bailey Hutchison is all big government. Cornyn is a mixed bag – but, there is never going to be a perfect candidate. People in our own party abhorred Reagan during his Presidency. Now everybody loves the memory. I remember – the left hated him and many on our side of the aisle did too. Glenn Beck hates everybody – what’s new? And yeah – I listen to and like Glenn – but, lap dog I am not! I like Rush even more – hard to find a flaw with Rush.

Everybody.

Please consider not responding to Cliff. His own words demonstrated his galactic cluelessness about what the Tea Parties and Glenn Beck is all about.

Nobody who actually watches Glenn Beck would EVER come to the conclusion he’s a Republican…much less a Bush supporter…quite the opposite. And of course, Republicans were just as criticized as much as the Dems at these Tea Parties.

Cliff is a hopeless koolaid drinker, and therefore not worthy of trying to bring him around to our way of thinking. His idiocy is self-evident, and every word he types demonstrates that. Some people simply aren’t capable of higher-order critical thinking.
