Shapiro’s Child Protection Bill Passes Senate

Jacob Fox Bill Passes through full Senate

Jacob’s Law, SB 572 by Senator Shapiro, last week passed out of the Senate Health & Human Services Committee. Jacob’s mother, Avonda, was there to testify on the bill, which requires all daycare providers to attend transportation safety training.

The training required in SB 572 would apply to providers transporting children whose
chronological or developmental age is nine-years-old or younger, and will be carried out
through the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Training topics would
include the proper use of safety restraints, vehicle maintenance, proper behavior during
transport, loading and unloading procedures, and safe accounting for each child and their
well-being.

Jacob Fox, the bill’s namesake, died in a daycare van after being left behind in 103 degree
temperatures. This year, several other cases of children being left in daycare vans have
surfaced, prompting Senator Shapiro to seek safety regulations through legislation.

For cryin’ out loud people, common sense is all you need to be able to check the transporting vehicle and if there is a child in it, get them out. Without common sense, training will not take effect on the idiot taking the training. Maybe just put a checklist by the driver’s seat that has to be turned in at the time of arrival, or the driver is not paid for that day. Be sure removal of all children is on the checklist. The money spent by the daycare centers for formal training has to come from somewhere, either raising the child care rates, or taxing the whole state for reimbursement for the courses. The day care owners are not going to pay for this out of their own pockets. Common sense tells me that.
