Cong. Cuellar: On National Guard Troops to Border Announcement

250 National Guard to Deploy to Texas’ Border Beginning August 1st

Texas Insider Report: Washington, DC – In response to today’s joint announcement by the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security to deploy 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S. southern border beginning August 1, 2010, Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) talked about the decision.

Congressman Cuellar is Chairman of the Subcommittee on Border, Maritime & Global Counterterrorism.

“In order to further combat illegal activity along our southern border, the National Guard will deploy in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security 1,200 troops to the U.S. Southern Border beginning August 1. The focus of this deployment is to provide additional support and surveillance to our border security efforts already underway.

“In doing so, the majority of these guardsmen will assist with border surveillance and serve as entry identification teams between our land ports of entry to support Border Patrol in detecting the movement of illegal aliens and contraband traffickers,” Cuellar said.

This temporary deployment, at a maximum of one year, will provide support in the following states:
  • Arizona:         524 National Guard to be deployed
  • California:    224 National Guard to be deployed
  • New Mexico:  72 National Guard to be deployed (will also provide support to the El Paso region)
  • Texas:              250 National Guard to be deployed

“Additional guardsmen will serve as criminal intelligence analysts to support DHS intelligence forces. This combination of additional support will ensure we take all necessary steps to combat the spectrum of threats we face along the U.S. Mexico border,” said Cuellar.

Additionally, 130 National Guard will serve as command and control to the overall mission.

“This temporary deployment will provide immediate support to our federal law enforcement until Customs and Border Protection and ICE can recruit and train additional officers, agents and analysts. I believe this will strengthen our multi-layered approach to combat narcotics, weapons and human smuggling along our border.

“As drug-related violence persists in neighboring Mexico, this is one more step we’re taking to ensure the safety of our border states who face a unique exposure to drug-related violence and illegal activity,” Cuellar said.

“Now we look to our Senate colleagues to immediately augment these efforts by passing the $701 million in emergency funding for the southern border that the House passed this July. These are critical funds to support our federal, state and local law enforcement that carry out our border security mission everyday,” said Cuellar.

Background information:

Today, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense announced the deployment of 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S. Mexico Border beginning August 1.
The President authorized this deployment in order to provide intelligence surveillance and additional law enforcement support to DHS efforts along the southern border.

Congressman Henry Cuellar is a member of the U.S. House Homeland Security, Agriculture, and Government Oversight & Reform Committees in the 111th Congress. Cuellar is also a Senior Whip & member of the Blue Dog Coalition.

1969 miles is the length of the Mexico USA border. That’s one additional individual for every 1.6 miles if they are on duty 24 hrs a day 365 days each year. If you figure they each are available 8 hours a day 5 days a week that means one additional body of every 6 miles.
Thanks so much you grinning yellow lap dog for making absolutely sure illegal activities will continue unabated along our southern border.
I suspect you are a friend and ally of Juan Hernandez:

Wow!! 1500, that puts 500 troops on duty for 8 hours a day, if you don’t allow them days off, this is a slap in the face to the problem, vote this guy out of office, he has to be on the take. You know why he’s grinning like the cat the ate the canary? We are the joke, we pay his salary, for life!!!! This guy is the reason we vote, to remove him from his lofty position.

Let’s be fair, it’s a start. It is definitely too little to make much of an impact. Also they are supplimenting existing customs check points, but little or no illegals go through those….that’s why they are referred to as wet-backs, they seek entry through remote/ungaurded areas.

If they set up stations and bases near the borders, troops could do their maneuvers and patrols and eliminate some of the places used to slip through. That combined with walls/fencing would cut down on illegal traffic. Also the presence of military bases would provide revenue to our border areas in the form of jobs and military member spending, thus uplifting the border towns/zones.

For those of you interested, I received a response from Rick Perry regarding Texas Guard manuevers on the southern border and our concerns with illegals crossing into the U.S. As expected, Perry said, “blah, blah, blah” and “it’s the federal government’s responsibility”. I think Perry was “de-horned” while he was sleeping. . . .

There is a raging river in the lower Texas border right now after Hurricane Alex created flooding in Mexico. Its treacherous and dangerous. Really, really life threatening, yet people are risking their lives, their families lives and meager possessions trying to swim across it. So how do we contain that type of flow of illegals–go after the people that lure them with jobs. Lets get to the root of the problem. We don’t need soldiers, we need to go after the employers: for no jobs, no need to come.

Its like the war on drugs. Millions poured into it. All we have to do is tell people to stop using it and getting addicted. The source will always be there, its the consumers (drug addicts) who are to blame.

WSR ~ Wow, for once I agree with you, to some extent! :) Yes, the people doing the hiring should be prosecuted, vigoorously. I don’t see this happening any time soon, though; and both parties share responsibility here. There is a much larger, and sinister, reason for securing the border: Terrorists are filtering into our country through our southern border.

As for the drug problem; yes, it’s caused by *our* addicts. Your solution, though, seems a bit flip and simplistic to me.

Cuellar is an amnesty guy, the guards on the border is an insincere effort from a man who himself is an illegal alien. We all know Barry Soetoro is an empty suit with a big mouth, a narcissistic self absorbed sissy who has been found to be a fake and a fraud! A consummate liar, Barry is closing in on canceling every campaign promise he made to get elected. Yep, “the libs ate it up” as Barry Soetoro put it.

The only thing real about Barry Soetoro is his teleprompters.

this is soooo frustrating. I know we are a great Country….and I know that what we have over here looks great….even if we have a very modest income…or just a small income is more than some of them make in Mexico…My husband and I struggled through life for the means we have…and it is not for someone else to tell us how we are going to spend it! They need to fight for what is theirs over in Mexico…shut our borders down completely…send all of the illegals home…then if they want to come to America get in line. And who knows what other Nationalities are coming through the border! Isn’t there suppose to be a certain amount of immigrants (that is immigrants not illegals) taken in a year??? Why can’t the laws be inforced….if that was one of us and we broke the law…do you think the courts would be as friendly to us…and we are the Citizens!!! All of the forces have said they can arrest them deport them…and they are back! What is the answer…it is frustrating…and yes I get very mad at Rick Perry for not standing up to what is right on this!! I’m not stupid…he is riding the fence for votes. But we sure don’t want White in there…but Rick doesn’t realize he is making his bed for the next election for someone will come a long and know what is right! Maybe Greg Abbot…??? They are trying to wear us down folks…we need to keep the good fight for right!!! off my soap box for the night….

The laws can be enforced however our Federal Government REFUSES to enforce all of them.
We are in a PERIOD of SELECTIVE enforcement of LAW.
Whenever this has happened in the past………………………….CHAOS and ANARCHY followed.
A RULING CLASS that DOES NOT ACCEPT or UNDERSTAND its fallibility is always doomed to failure.
Unfortunately that is USUAL proceeded by REVOLUTION.

CW ~ This “period of selective enforcement” has proceeded for quite some time.

Pity so many ignore history. We could be spared a lot of grief if our citizenry could bring themselves to acknowledge the inevitable result of present behavior.

Gee, all of these new EYES on our borders is nice but nowhere in the article did I see or get any information that our National Guard will have the authority to carry weapons and, if they do have the authority to carry weapons, will they be authorized to fire back if fired upon. If it is our intention to put a “show of force” on our borders with Mexico, to deal with the unarmed illigeals coming acorss our borders, then we also need to PROVIDE SOME ARMED FORCE to deal with the armed drug cartels that are invading our state/country as well. Just look at what is going on in AZ. This isn’t a game of just gathering INTEL, people, this is LAW ENFORCEMENT at the grass roots level. If you’re going to put our National Guard (military) there to be enforcers of our NATIONAL laws, then give our troops the ability to defend themselves when an armed conflict occurs. Make it clear to our troops, to the American people, the Mexican government, and to the illigals and drug cartels that that our troops are there and they are armed and can be dangerous to your health if you want to violate our laws. We don’t need our troops to be present dressed in PINK BDU’s, a canteen, binoculars, traffic counters, and a radio, we need them present and equipped in full battle gear with the authority to do whatever it takes to apprehend or neutralize those who violate our border laws. Really, its a no brainer for those who have a brain.

Ray ~ Given the rules of engagement muderously inflicted upon our troops in Afghanistan, I don’t expect better for military stationed along the border.

The pitiful number of military is just for show, anyway, to demonstrate how *serious* the regime is. Those predators think the American people are utter fools…….and they’re right. They are, after all, in office.
