Tea Party Conundrum Facing Republicans Going Forward

By Ed Kilgore, The Democratic Strategist

Ah, another Tax Day, another Tea Party poll!  This one, from CBS/New York Times, is probably the most extensive we’ve seen.  But the findings are only surprising to people who haven’t been paying close attention to the Tea Party Movement.

Tea Partiers are, in almost every significant respect, overwhelmingly conservative Republicans.

  • Two-thirds say they always or usually vote Republican.
  • Two-thirds are regular Fox viewers.
  • 57% have a favorable view of George W. Bush, and tea partiers, unlike their fellow-citizens, almost entirely absolve the Bush administration from responsibility for either the economic situation or current budget deficits.
  • Over 90% of them disapprove of Barack Obama’s job performance in every area they were asked about, and in another sharp difference from everyone else, 84% disapprove of him personally.
  • 92% think Obama’s moving the country “in the direction of socialism.”
  • Nearly a third think he was born in another country.
  • Three-fourths think government aid to poor people keeps the poor instead of helping them.
  • Over half think too much has been made of the problems facing black people.
  • Well over half think the Obama administration has favored the poor over the rich and the middle class (only 15% of Americans generally feel that way).

Interestingly, tea partiers are less likely than the public as a whole to think we need a third political party. That shouldn’t be surprising in a cohort that basically thinks the Bush administration was hunky-dory, but you’d never guess it from all the talk about the “threat” of a Tea Party-based third party.

So these are basically older (32% are retired) white conservative Republicans whose main goal, they overwhelmingly say, is to “reduce government.” But two-thirds think Social Security and Medicare are a good bargain for the country.

And they certainly won’t support higher taxes.

Here’s a revealing glimpse into the older-white-conservative psychology from the Times write-up of the poll:

[N]early three-quarters of those who favor smaller government said they would prefer it even if it meant spending on domestic programs would be cut. But in follow-up interviews, Tea Party supporters said they did not want to cut Medicare or Social Security — the biggest domestic programs, suggesting instead a focus on “waste.”

Some defended being on Social Security while fighting big government by saying that since they had paid into the system, they deserved the benefits. Others could not explain the contradiction.

“That’s a conundrum, isn’t it?” asked Jodine White, 62, of Rocklin, Calif.

“I don’t know what to say. Maybe I don’t want smaller government. I guess I want smaller government and my Social Security.” She added, “I didn’t look at it from the perspective of losing things I need. I think I’ve changed my mind.”

And that’s the conundrum facing the Republican Party going forward.

Having created a fiscal time bomb during the Bush administration, they are now born-again deficit hawks, and moreover, profess to think today’s federal government represents a socialist tyranny. But they are even more adamantly opposed to higher taxes, and their base doesn’t want them to touch “their” Social Security and Medicare, which they figure they’ve earned.

Barring a major retraction of America’s active role in the world, which would enable big reductions in defense spending (and we know few conservative Republicans favor that), the only thing left to do is the sort of wholesale elimination of federal functions last attempted by Republicans in 1995, which failed miserably, or an all-out attack on means-tested programs benefitting the poor.

By all evidence, this last approach may please many Tea Partiers, but justice and efficacy aside, there is no approach more guaranteed to ensure that the Republican Party’s base gets even older and whiter than it already is.

At some point, the famous “anger” of the Tea Partiers will have to be propitiated by GOP leaders, but there’s no obvious way out of the dilemma Republicans have created for themselves.

Yeah, that’s a big issue with the TPers, but equally disturbing is that they have no solutions either. They are just like the Republican party: “No” is the only suggestion they have.

When you pay into social security for over 50 years and are penalized for not signing up to it make no sense to turn it down. Our government pushes it down our throat whether we want it or not. Many millionaires and billionaires are collecting it. It was never initiated to be your only income. The tea party people come from all walks of life. The media will learn they have become more knowledgeable than the regular public. If the media did their job instead of questioning the reason they are so vocal the whole country would be up in arms about the debt, lies, bribes, corruption that is attacking us.

TPer’s do want less government and to hang on to what they have earned. Funny how the Dems always bring up Social Security as something to dip into when ever they need some extra bucks for some special project that benefits those too lazy to work and do nothing more than hold out their hands for their next check from Uncle Sam. The way the SS program was guaranteed by Roosevelt was that it for for the people, Democrat administrations are the only party to have dipped into that cash! After years of paying into it – I’m going to be lucky to get any of it back as it is handed to those who have never once paid into it! Stop the free ride and give me what I was promised by our government! This country was once a Republic – now its a Democracy and it isn’t working. If they want to do away with SS – fine by me, just hand me all the cash I have paid into it first with the interest it has accrued over the past 40+ years.

Funny…TPers are all receiving FAR more from SOCIAL security and Medicare than they ever put in. Since TPers are so old, maybe our youth should rise up and refuse to fund the SOCIAL programs for the old TPers. When the TPers have withdraw what they put into it, then the program ends for them. Problem solved. You can’t pick and choose what you stand for. Either you are for it or against it. Since you seem set on being against it, then the funding of those SOCIAL programs for your benefit can end once fully paid out. Go back and see how much you paid into it. Do you still deserve to be receiving it?

Tomorrow belongs to the new generation that voted Obama in. You old people had your time and look where we are now after your 30+ years of rein. Like it or not, our future is in their hands. Many are bright and intelligent. Our future doctors, scientist, innovators and so on will decide the future of this county now. I highly doubt most would want to pay for your nursing home, wheelchairs and diabetes medication. The new generation doesn’t have the degree of hate and disdain for others that the older generation does ( at least not the educated ones).

I think it’s also important for people to remember that when social security was implemented the average life span was much shorter. Most people were expected to die before receiving Social security. Many people live into their 80’s now. You want to fix social security? Raise the collection age. Problem solved.

The Tea Party is not so much a conundrum as it is a classic early stage third wheel. There is a great story on the historicial context of the Tea Party, its development, and likely evolution at:

Where to start?
taxes went up for the middle class with Reagan, both bushes now how many Americans make a million plus? no real taxes for them wow even tax cuts and where are they getting and keeping jobs here-no getting a tax cut for offshore jobs oh by the way they still cost about the same as when they were made in America.

Warren Buffet is taxed at a lower rate than his secretary who makes quite a bit less.
Think people.

“Psychological Warfare… *Or how they got the Tards to vote for George W. Bush” (see: actspo.blogspot.com)

I’ve researched the AM Radio Free Conservative/FOX News propaganda machine and it turns out spokespersons like O’Reilly, Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, etc… are TRAITORS working for foreign special interests that want to “divide and conquer” the American PEOPLE. PROPAGANDA on a scale not seen since Tokyo Rose…

I’m sure the Saudi Royals (Kingdom Holding Co.) who are now majority stockholders in Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp/FOX News are confident of their long range strategic planning.

IT’S TIME TO CALL OUT FOX NEWS AND FIGHT BACK AGAINST THESE CONSERVATIVE INSURGENTS before they allow the destruction of the USA.

NOTE: (did you see the video of the TRAITORS Ailes, O’Reilly, Hannity, Beck and the rest of FOX news puppets lining up t0 kiss the right shoulder of the Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talai? I got ill during the Saudi sword dance celebrating how they got the American, ignorant, right-wing fanatics to VOTE AGAINST THEIR OWN BEST INTERESTS!

…It’s even more sickening than all the hand holding/kissing Bush Jr. used to do at the ranch in Crawford TX. George W. Bush always resembled a smitten school girl ever time he was in the presence of Saudi Royals…

HA Republicans… nothing but #*~/’n obstructionists who allowed a bunch of vain, self-serving, power mad, greed stricken, silver spoon CON artists to ravage and expatriate most of our nation’s wealth and resources. The USA is in the middle of a fire sale where drug trafficers, Saudi Royals, India and communists China are buying up our most valuable assets… Thanks for NOTHING you Republican/Conservative wackos.

The recent threats against Democrats, Dr. Tiller, the holocaust museum shooting, anti-abortion terrorist bombings, church shootings, mining disasters, Wall Street scandal (and that other story that got buried) the IRS building attack in Austin, TX. (look in you community newspaper in Crimes section and see if hate crimes aren’t UP in your locality) I like to call IT Conservative Wacko Terrorism

I can’t believe the REAL news media allows Glenn Beck and the other FOX News puppets to get away with their blatant drive to spread hate speech, Corporate disinformation and warped interpretations of the Bible. I don’t think the American PEOPLE are going to allow public policy to be driven by a bunch of dumb@$$ Glenn Beck/Sarah Palin groupies.

Uneducated of the WORLD:t the time the Interest rate was 16%.
Three years later between the 2 of us we had contributed a total of $7500.00.
Interest rates were declining and the Bank that issued the IRA made us an offer.
10% per/yr but we could never add to that account.
By the time we are 70 1/2 and have to start making withdrawals for a total contribution of $7500.00 we will each collect over $7500.00/yr with out touching the principle.

For the MORONS that believe collecting more than you pay in…………………………..the Government used our MONEY, which should have and could have earned MORE than any INDIVIDUAL could have ever needed, to establish entitlement programs for worthless excuses for human beings that would NOT work for a living.
In total our investments vs the money the government TOOK from us (that we had NO CHOICE in exempting ourselves from the program) not counting the equal amount they took from our employers, the personal investments will pay out $10.00 more than Social Security.
SOCIAL SECURITY was and STILL is the GREATEST PONZI SCHEME in History.

I agree, the government raided the Social Security program and it never should have been touched. That wasn’t the governments money to spend, it was ours.

Question for CWJ: Who exactly do you think is sitting around collecting welfare? You seem to think it is all people that are not conservative Teabaggers over the age of 45. I personally don’t know anyone who is on welfare, even though I know they are out there.

You also need to cool it. Your blood pressure is rising and you will pop a vein. I work with both conservative republicans and democrats. Many are my friends. Just because we don’t agree, doesn’t change how I feel about them as a person. They are all fine people.

You are sadly mistaken, Ed. The premise of connecting the GOP and the Tea Party is entirely wrong. Although they identify with it, the Tea Party itself is not part of, nor supported by, the Republican party. The Left would like to paint this picture for their political gain, but it is simply not true.

The validity of your figures are suspect at best. You fail to give any statistical background of the CBS/NYTimes “survey”. Most people are smart enough to know that any poll can be manipulated to achieve the desired results.

As to Medicare and Social Security, I thought cutting waste and fraud in government programs was a good thing. At least Obama thinks so, for a huge portion of his ridiculous, fantasy-based health “care” reform is supposed to be financed by this method.

And exactly who are the people which “created a fiscal time bomb during the Bush administration” that you refer to? You couldn’t be speaking of those who have had money taken from their pockets their entire working lives under the false pretense of finacial security upon retirement, would you?

Social security was a promise, made by FDR, to assist the retired. It was forced savings, because the government knew that people were too stupid to save for their own retirement. But, lo and behold, LBJ “reformed” the system in 1965, which allowed the government to spend it for us. Without this “reform” there would be no impending insolvency, no “general fund” to be used at their every whim.

Waste and fraud, rampant throughout Medicare, can only be eliminated by reducing the huge bureaucracy supposedly required to administer this program. How can this happen when Obamacare just added a huge new program on top, with a whole new layer of bureaucratic red tape to wade through?

I can agree with the fact that the GOP faces a real problem. The Tea Party has addressed their concerns and their wish to hold our government in line with the Constitution. Now it is time for the Republican party to make a decision. Either they purge their ranks, and return to solid conservative values, or they will find support at the polls divided among themselves and the Tea Party, which will surely mean defeat.

Always love to hear a Progressive RAT giving advice to conservatives. Here are three clues for you Ed:

Clue 1: Both the RATparty and the country-club Wimpublicans want a titanic federal government – it’s just that THEY want to control it instead of the other party.

Clue 2: That is NOT what the TEA party people want. Try to actually attend one of the rallies for a change. And While There, Read Their Signs, Stupid.

Clue 3: The adjective “titanic” was intentionally chosen…

No one seems to ask the most obvious question: How did the NYT/CBS get the information for this poll? There is no registry of Tea Party members. If the lamestreams had the guts to show up at a Tea Party, the last thing they would get is any personal information out of anyone there. Most of them, as dim as they are, would not be asking for personal information at an event so just where did these so-called facts come from?

Maybe the question should be rephrased: How was this information manufactured?

No one seems to have a clue…

It just burns me to have a liberal thinks he knows exactly what all of we “Conservative Tea Party are thinking”. All the old never ending generalizing statements such as…We all think the Bush administration was hunky dory. Bunk, how many times have we said, Bush spent too much money? So we all watch the Fox channel…well duh! We should be watching Chris Matthews with the thrill running up his leg? Oh Yes, and we don’t want to give up our Social Security…..Well, if it had not been forced all these years for us to pay in to the ponzzi scheme, I would not have been in it, because not only I will not be able to have it for my retirement, it has been going to everyone but me! All I wanted was out. If we had an option, no one would be in that looser slush fund for politicians. And don’t even get me started on Medicare. so stop putting these blitthering idiots who repeat the same liberal tripe and diatribe on this site. It is always the same crap, no matter what the name is on the article when the writer is a lib.

The Constitution of the United States does not give the federal government the right to do anything that the states desire to control for themselves.
Freedom and socialism do not exist together.
I agree with most of what I hear from Tea Party Democrats, Independents and Republicans.
Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are all bad ideas. They are full of fraud.
Social Security is not an account somewhere with your name on it.
Democrats have used this money for other purposes for years yet most Americans do not realize this deceitful lie.
Those too poor or disabled or unable to pay for medical care or food or essentials should be supported financially by organizations like Samaritan’s Purse. Independent auditors should supply the public with statements so that donators will know what percentage of the donations is actually spent on the people.
Government is too full of power-hungry elitist people who use the dependent to win elections.

Look at Europe. This is what the Democrats want for us. Socialism has not worked in Europe or anywhere else it has been tried. It goes against human nature. If you are going to tax most of my money, then why should I work hard?
We should all just sit back and let the government take care of us.
Hum, but who will pay for everything?
I am willing to give up all my benefits if the government ends all entitlements!
I am responsible. I can take care of myself and keep my freedom, thank-you!

Final WORDS on Social Security:

Social Security

Your Social Security

Just in case some of you young whippersnappers (& some older ones) didn’t know this. It’s easy to check out, if you don’t believe it.

Be sure and show it to your kids. They need a little history lesson on what’s what and it doesn’t matter whether you are Democrat or Republican. Facts are Facts!!!

Our Social Security

Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social
Security (FICA) Program. He promised:

1.) That participation in the Program would be
Completely voluntary,

No longer Voluntary

2.) That the participants would only have to pay
1% of the first $1,400 of their annual
Incomes into the Program,

Now 7.65%

3.) That the money the participants elected to put
Into the Program would be deductible from
Their income for tax purposes each year,

No longer tax deductible

4.) That the money the participants put into the
Independent ‘Trust Fund’ rather than into the
General operating fund, and therefore, would
Only be used to fund the Social Security
Retirement Program, and no other
Government program, and,

Under Johnson the money was moved to

The General Fund and Spent

5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees
Would never be taxed as income.

Under Clinton & Gore

Up to 85% of your Social Security can be Taxed

Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are
Now receiving a Social Security check every month —
And then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of
The money we paid to the Federal government to ‘put
Away — you may be interested in the following:

———— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— —-

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the
Independent ‘Trust Fund’ and put it into the
General fund so that Congress could spend it?

A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically
Controlled House and Senate.

———— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— —

Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax
Deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?

A: The Democratic Party.

———— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— —–

Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social
Security annuities?

A: The Democratic Party, wit h Al Gore casting the
‘tie-breaking’ deciding vote as President of the
Senate, while he was Vice President of the US

———— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— –

Q: Which Political Party decided to start
Giving
Annuity payments to immigrants?

AND MY FAVORITE:

A: That’s right!

Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party.
Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65,
Began to receive Social Security payments! The
Democratic Party gave these payments to them,
Even though they never paid a dime into it!

———— — ———— ——— —– ———— ——— ———

Then, after violating the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!

And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it!

If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of
Awareness will be planted and maybe changes will
Evolve. Maybe not, some Democrats are awfully
Sure of what isn’t so.

But it’s worth a try. How many people can YOU send this to?

Actions speak louder than bumper stickers.

AND CONGRESS GIVES THEMSELVES 100% RETIREMENT FOR ONLY SERVING ONE TERM!!!

A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.

The only solution is to repeal the Progressive Income Tax and replace it with a Fair Tax. Instead of us arguing over how the government should spend our money or whom they should give it to, let’s just let each individual keep their own earned money. We cannot trust elected representatives to carry out our wishes long-term because every few years the side that gives loses to the side that gets.
